1^st Grade Summer Reading List - 2009-2010

Parents,

          We as first grade teachers feel the single most important thing you can do to prepare your child for learning to read is to read to them.  That is why we are asking that you read a minimum of 5 books with your child over the summer.  We know that most students will not be reading independently, so these books can be read to the students.  While reading with your child, look at the cover and make predictions about the story.  Talk about the book and discuss the characters and how they feel or why they did what they did.  Discuss the pictures and point out how they are clues to understanding the story.  Have your child find specific letters and words on the page.  Have them retell the story in their own words.  Have them illustrate their favorite part or dictate to you a sentence telling what the story was mainly about.

          Also, sign up for the summer reading program at the Public Library.

Please list the title and author of 5 books you read together, discussed, and complete several of the ideas listed above.  This form is due at registration or on the first day of school!
