Council Traditional School

Parent Bulletin

September 2017

Volume 3

IB Learner Profile for September- Open-Minded. Students and adults that are Open-Minded understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories. They are open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of others. They seek other points of view and are willing to grow from the experience. Remember to be open-minded for the month of September.

Academic Focus: Reading Proficiency requires students to be able to identify words on a page accurately and fluently. Students should have the thinking ability to understand the words, sentences, and paragraphs. Teachers will help to motivate students, as well as keep them engaged in the text. Students will learn to use their knowledge and thinking ability to understand and learn from the text. Motivation is a key component in understanding text. Tips for encouraging good readers while at home:

1.      Keep a book caddy in your car. When you are riding, encourage your child to read a short story.

2.      Just before bed time, read with your child (You read a page/your child reads a page.)

3.      Read a chapter ahead of your child. Then ask questions after they have completed the chapter, too.

4.      Have a reward for books completed.

  •  Cheap rewards work very well
  •  Sticker chart posted
  • Playing a board game with your child
  • Quality time spent with your child

5.      Family Book Club Night (Everyone discussing books read over the week or month.)

Thank You Parents: Thanks for a smooth transition back to school. We are off to an amazing start. It was delightful to see all of our families at Open House.

Light House Blue Ribbon: This is an educational organization that will conduct surveys of different stakeholders in our school. This year parents/teachers/students will receive a survey code. Once all surveys have been completed, we will share a summary of our results with everyone. Please participate in the survey. A letter with your code is attached to this bulletin.

Geography Club: This will start on Friday, September 15th from 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Grandparents’ Day: Our grandparents’ day will include a celebration of all of our Super Grandparents at Council. Recognition of grandparents will be Thursday, September 28th for grandparents of students in grades K-2. The program will start at 8:30 a.m. Students’ grandparents in grades 3-5 will be recognized on Friday, September 29th at 8:30 a.m.

PTA Grandparents’ Day T-Shirt Sale: The PTA will sell t-shirts with the grandparents’ day theme on the shirt. A form will be sent home for pre-order.

Book Fair: The fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held September 25-29, 2017. We look forward to having our grandparents visit the book fair on Thursday and Friday of that week. We will need a lot of help, especially on days celebrating our grandparents, but also the rest of the week. If you are willing to help out, please e-mail Heather Hartmann at

Progress Reports: Students will receive Progress Reports on September 8, 2017.

Please Remember: Students should not be dropped off before 7:30 a.m. unless the student has been properly enrolled in extended day. All students must be dismissed by Virginia Street, Van, Bus, Extended Day or Car Pool. Parents should not pull students from the line on the way to car pool or enter the gym to pick up car pool students. The car pool gate will open each day at approximately 2:45, after P.E. class. Patience is Golden at CTS.

US Secretary Betsy DeVos: We are very proud that Council was selected by the Central Office and Superintendent Peek, to share our school with Mrs. Betsy DeVos, National Secretary of Education. Our teachers and staff enjoyed the visit, and we are proud of our students and their accomplishments.
