PARENT BULLETIN

September 2016

IB/PYP Learner Profile “OPEN-MINDED”

Students and adults that are open – minded understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories. They are open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of others. They seek other points of view and are willing to grow from the experience.

Academic Focus: Writing

Students will use the theme “Sharing Fond Memories of Time Spent with Grandparents and Special Friends” to develop expository writing samples for 1st quarter writing requirements. Teachers will begin to teach the process so that the finished product will be available during Grandparents and Special Friends Day.

Open House

Thanks for a successful Open House this year! All parents should be acclimated to their child’s teachers, environment and the school as a whole. Please continue to keep up with your child’s progress by reviewing notes, bulletins, emails and the INOW program as it relates to your child.

Campus Beatification

Thanks to the P.T.A. staff and students for dedicating your time to the beautification of our campus.

September is Attendance Awareness Month for MCPSS.

Our goal is 100% classroom attendance for September.

Students, we challenge you to attend EVERY DAY in September!

September 12-16 has been designated as Bullying Prevention Week. We will bring awareness of the national problem to our school. The theme is Bullying Ends with Me. During the week, we will have a variety of bullying prevention activities for the students. Students that have purchased a “Bully T- Shirt” may wear this shirt with their khaki pants and red belt on Thursday, September 15, 2016.

Progress Reports

Parents, you should have a copy of your child’s Progress Report by Friday, September 16th. If there are questions regarding your child’s grades, please e-mail the teacher. Your child’s teacher will contact you with a date and time for your conference.

Handbook

The parent/student handbook is user-friendly. The front of the book will list the days that we are out of school for holidays. Also, the general time frames for everything that we have in the school is listed. The bulletin will provide more specific dates and times. Please use your handbook to stay up-to-date on school events.

Pick up from School

The scheduled time for students to be picked up from school is 3:00 p.m. sharp. We have approximately 690 students and we start afternoon dismissal in time for all students to be in their designated areas for pick up at 3:00 p.m. The teachers’ day starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. each day so that teachers can go home. PLEASE PICK-UP YOUR CHILDREN/CHILD ON TIME! If you have an emergency please call the office to let the school know that you will be running a few minutes late.

Allergies

Please inform the school’s health office if your child has allergies that require medication or an epiPen. The proper forms will need to be completed. The nurse will inform the teachers and or cafeteria as needed. Council is not a totally nut free school, however, we designate nut free classrooms as needed. If your child’s teacher informs you that she has a child that needs a nut free environment please cooperate for the health and well-being of our Council students.

Join the PTA

Council has had a long tradition of being #1 in the school system and state for PTA membership. This is our 28th year with an outstanding PTA membership. Let’s keep up the great work. Classrooms are very competitive as everyone would like 100% PTA membership for their classroom. Parents, it is only $6.00 to join. Please join the PTA for each one of your children.

Donation Appeal

PTA gladly accepts donations throughout the school year to defray the cost of any fundraising efforts. Please consider making a donation.

HABITUAL EARLY DISMISSALS:                                                                                                                                                     Students’ Early dismissals are reserved for family emergencies, not for the Friday football games and other non-academic extracurricular activities. We have noticed that early dismissals are interfering with the following afternoon subjects: Math, Social Studies, and Science for reasons that are unacceptable. Please send a courtesy note to the classroom teacher with the time and reason for any early dismissal. Parents, please help us teach our students’ academic responsibility.

DISMISSAL REQUEST BY PHONE

All dismissal changes MUST be in writing. Calls to the office concerning changes in a dismissal procedure WILL NOT be accepted. Written notices can be sent with your child or faxed to Council.

Council’s Fax: 251-221-1140.

Clubs

Our school takes pride in the fact that we not only try to offer an outstanding academic curriculum but we try to make sure that children are well- rounded by offering a variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs. Some of the programs are operated by teachers and /or Parent Volunteers. The Dace program is a company that provides services to our students on campus; this is a paid service. The administration would like to request that you and your child review the times for practices/meetings and pickup carefully to make sure that the times fit into your schedule. We appreciate parents picking up on time if your child participates in an activity or club.
